What vendors use QR codes for

A QR code turns a phone camera into a link. At a booth that is useful precisely because the sale is not always the end of the interaction — plenty of people who do not buy today would follow you if it took one second instead of a search.

Making one that actually scans

Print it at least an inch square for close range, and considerably larger for anything read from across a table.

Keep the quiet zone — the clear margin around the code. Codes crowded up against a border or artwork fail to read.

Keep the contrast dark-on-light. Inverted or low-contrast codes are unreliable, and a code that fails once will not be tried twice.

Test it with a real phone before printing a hundred. Test it again after printing, on the actual card stock.

Tell people what it does

A bare code is a gamble; nobody scans an unexplained square. Three words above it — "Shop online", "Follow us", "Pay here" — make the difference between a code that gets used and one that is decoration.

Where to put it

Signal at markets is frequently poor. A code pointing at a fast, simple page is more likely to survive a weak connection than one pointing at a heavy site.

Put the code on your tags with the price tag maker, and if the code is for payment, check what processing costs you with the card fee reconciler.

Frequently asked questions

What should a craft fair QR code link to?
Most often a payment link, an online shop, or a social or mailing-list signup. The follow is usually worth more long-term than a single sale, because it reaches people who did not buy on the day.
How big should a printed QR code be?
At least one inch square for close scanning, and larger for anything read across a table. Keep a clear margin — the quiet zone — around it, or it will not read.
Why won't my QR code scan?
Usually it is too small, missing its quiet zone, printed at low contrast or inverted, or blurred by low-resolution printing. Test with a real phone on the actual printed material before making a batch.
Do I need to label the QR code?
Yes. An unlabelled code rarely gets scanned. A short line such as 'Shop online' or 'Pay here' tells people what they get for scanning.
Do QR codes expire?
A static code encodes the destination directly and works as long as that destination does. Codes generated here are static, so there is no account or subscription to lapse.
Is the QR code generator free?
Yes — no sign-up, no watermark, and codes are generated in your browser.
